Re: His Dark Materials - **SPOILER THREAD**
Sun, February 3, 2008 - 10:29 PMI just finished it and absolutely loved it!
These are some particular things I enjoyed
everything the characters were "supposed" to do (by fate or whatever) was done innocently. Killing the Authority, Mary's story about the guy she kissed, ect.
Lyra, Will and Lee always acted on what they felt was the right thing to do, regardless or what they were told or what they were supposed to do. Yeh I know at the end they dont really want to be apart but they knew it was the right thing.
the whole thing with the Mulefa..I really like them for some reason
Mrs Coulter's being a horrible person is what helps her getting away with doing something good in the end
How even tho they changed the fate of all existance in all the unniverses they went back to "normal" lives at the end..probably never fully realizing all the changes hey brought on.
and now for some questions:
has anybody read Lyra's Oxford?
I wonder what happened with Will's mother? I think he probably didnt get in much touble because the man that he killed was an MIB and the govent probably hid th whole thing. I'm sure they eventually lived with Mary but I wonder if his mom was ok or institutionalizd when he got back
Did Lyra ever know her parents did care about her at the end?
Did her and wll ever marry other people?
did she see Iorek again?

Re: His Dark Materials - **SPOILER THREAD**
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 5:22 PMJust now finished reading TAS. Wow. Just wow. That was some truly amazing writing!! Such delicious agony and pathos all throughout, but especially in this last book.
It struck me how similarly trapped both the Authority and the ghosts of the underworld were, and how blissful they all looked when they were released from their prisons.
I agree about the Mulefa. I really liked them too. Such peacefulness and tranquility. I was equally fond of the Galivsepians and how they grew to love the children. I wish they had gotten to know their own daemons.
As for Lyra's Oxford, I'm gonna run to the bookstore tomorrow and pick it up. Who's up for reading that as the next book club book? And beyond that, does anyone have any suggestions for other books? I know Holli had messaged me about reading a Stephen King's Dark Tower series. How does everyone feel about that? -

Re: His Dark Materials - **SPOILER THREAD**
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 9:24 PMI was just thinking about that today..that since we have no mora Harry Potter books to look forward to, we could just turn F7B into our random book club and just keep reding stuff that interests all of us.
I definitely want to read Lara's Oxford, but I need to take a little break since I promised myself I was gonna finish all the books I got for xmas before I got any new ones. I'm done with his Dark Materials, but the other 2 I have are not really novels that we can discuss, they are both movie books, one is about the making of Grindhouse and the other one about the making of Sweeney Todd. They should be kinda quick to finish tho since they both have a lot of pictures.
I wouldnt mind reading the dark tower series, I havent read any of them.
I also recently got Weaveworld by Clive Barker, cuz I found a hardcover version at a thrift store and a few people had told me it was good. any of you guys ever read that one?

Re: His Dark Materials - **SPOILER THREAD**
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 7:30 PMI wouldn't mind starting another series - although it'll be a juggling act to balance school reading with pleasure reading... but I have to get something fun in there or else I'll go crazy. -

Re: His Dark Materials - **SPOILER THREAD**
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 11:30 PMYeah, I don't know, dude. I mean, the GC was kind of ok. I did like it , it reeled me in. However, the SK was kind of pitchy for me, man. Then the SK was totally out of tune. I get it as a whole and felt it was wrapped up, but there were so many random strings out there floating around that i couldn't not think about them while i shoulda been just keeping in mind what i was reading right then. The cittegazze was snoozeville and those mulafas - i am so distracted by what they should look like. i wonder if i google them will there be drawings. It just got to be a wee bit to melodramatic for me. There are tons of aspects of it which I did enjoy immensely. So, surely, I shall revisit it some time later.
For now, I am reading Auntie Mame and soon its sequel. Thereafter, I endeavor to read Eragorn and its sequel. -

Re: His Dark Materials - **SPOILER THREAD**
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 10:58 AMI agree with G-girl on the books. Didn't care at all for Cittegazze except when they went into the tower, mulefas disturbed me...call me a prude but i don't think I would drink mulefa juice. I did enjoy Golden Compass, but not SK. I hated how Lira acted in SK. I loved all the religious stuff in AS, but could really careless about preteens falling in love. Sorry. I don't know that I would recommend these books. that being said there is a lot about the books that I did love: Altheiometers, Dust, Daemons, Gyptians, armored bears, cutting holes into other worlds, the enfluence & corruption of the church. I think I've just gotten tired of stories relying on children to save the world. No children...especially teens...that I know could save the world. Give me a story about a 30+ year old, couch potato who accidentally destroys the world....you know something that I can relate to! (-:
