Are they physical beings? They seem to be, but they dont leave a body behind when they die. Are they solid spirits?
What does a baby's daemon look like? Are they puppies and kittens? how about a newborn? When a mother picks up a baby, does her deamon pck up the baby' daemon or do they just follow?
Do you guys have anything you have been wondering about?

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 6:34 PMI've been wondering much the same thing. How are daemons brought into the world? Do the child's parents' daemons mate as well? Or does the daemon form in the womb with the fetus and follow along with the afterbirth? -

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 7:38 PMI've been wondering why they choose the forms they do. When the humans become adults, and the daemons lose their ability to change, is the form the take what they prefer, or does it some kind of external visualization of characteristics possessed by the human? -
-
Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 6:54 AMSince most servants wind up with dogs as their daemons, I would think that the form they ultimately choose is a reflection of one's career/station in life. -

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 9:42 AMFrom what I understand, daemon's are like the soul. There's the soul/body/intellect with each person - the intellect residing in the person's body and the soul as their daemon.
People don't touch other people's daemons - but a daemon touching another daemon happens... I'd imagine that at some point a baby's daemon just appears. Probably not right at birth since a child is being handled, cleaned, etc and there's the prohibition about someone touching another's daemon. So maybe once the child begins to speak - then the soul separates into another being? Once the intellect has begun to form in a child's body?
He doesn't ever really explain how they come into being - but later on he lets you know what happens after death. -

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 10:04 AMSo, after finishing the first two parts of TGC, this is what I know already about daemons:
**SPOILERS (to a degree) if you haven't gotten this far yet**
There's a taboo about touching others' daemons, but it does occasionally happen.
When someone touches another person's daemon, that person feels the contact.
They also feel what their daemon feels - if another daemon fights yours, you feel it's pain.
When a daemon is killed by someone, their person dies with them.
When a person dies, their daemon fades away.
People feel a physical pain if their daemon goes more than a few yards from them, unless they're a witch (who can send their daemons miles away)
Daemon forms settle sometime after or during puberty, taking a permanent form consistent with the personality of the individual, and not always what's desired.
Did I miss anything? -

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 12:47 PMnope, I think you got it all! You learn a little bit more about daemons in Amber Spyglass - like how witches daemons are allowed to travel so far from them, and how daemons and dust are related.

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 8:18 PMI was wondering about the mating thing too...you think daemons have sex or they just stand aside and look politely the other way while you doit...maybe having some awkward conversation among themselves...
I think I'm going with the assumption that daemons show up sometime after the baby its born, and even if they are kittens, they are not newborn looking kittens....maybe they are full grown since old people daemons seem to look young.
Here's another one I was wondering about: how big a daemon can you have? could yoou have like an elephant daemon? sure it would be inconvenient, but can you? What abot a horse? Could you ride your daemon if it took thhe form of a horse?
Pan turns into random furrry creatures to keep Lyra warm...could he turn into something more useful? -

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 8:27 PMIt doesn't seem like daemons can be an animal bigger than a human. At least, there aren't any examples of it that I have seen. I never imagined that a daemon ages. Also, I think that they are just there when a child is born, neither physically given birth by the mother nor physically separated from the newborn. They are just... there. I think also that daemons don't actually have sex with each other. but two lovers' daemons will carress and be affectionate with each other. Daemons are a physical manifestation of the soul, and your soul doesn't literally fuck another soul. It's more about the closeness. -

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 3:49 AMThe largest Daemon I think we've seen (or heard about in a story within the story) was that Gyptian fellow who had a dolphin for a daemon and could therefore never leave a life on the ocean. Dolphins aren't the smallest of marine life...
As for what daemons do when their people have sex...I kinda imagine them sitting there staring at the act with puzzlement. Sort of the way my cats do if I forget to close the door. -

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 10:09 AMPolly's right, daemons go along with the emotions of the participants, so if you're feeling amorous, so is your daemon...you'll see...;) -
-
Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 11:08 AMWell a dolphin would be roughly the size of a man, right? I don't think they get bigger than that, though. What a pain in the ass that would be... an elephant daemon. You'd have to live in a tent and you couldn't go anywhere. -
-
Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 1:47 PMMan! I want a daemon now. Not an elephant, but the thought of a cuddly thing to calm me down and keep me warm? AND enhance my amourous moods? Hot cha cha! I want one!

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 9:09 PMDaemon's are definitely physical manifestations of the individual's soul. Servants daemons are things like beagles and bunnies because that's representative of their docility. Lord Asriel's daemon is a snow leopard because he is bold, powerful and adventurous, Mrs. Coulter's daemon is a wicked little fucker of a monkey because she is cunning and heartless. (Few female antagonists have been written as well as Mrs. Coulter, don't you think? Though... for those of you enjoying Phillip Pullman's work..... read the Sally Lockhart mystery series...... there's a character in there, Mrs. Holland, who makes Mrs. Coulter seem saintly by comparison!)
Also, Daemon's definitely get into the juicy love vibration!! It's one of the (many) sections of this series where you read it and say, damn!! I can't believe he wrote this stuff in a work of "juvenile" fiction!! l -

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Fri, January 18, 2008 - 10:16 AMYes, reading the series to the kids I take care of, there are definitely sections where I have to check in with them as I read. A little sexy, a little violent.

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 1:29 PMOk, I don't know if this was mentioned in another thread...I'm really just getting online again. I finished TSK and this is a daemon question about that...so if you haven't made it tto he last few chapters don't read any further.
If Grumman got a daemon by going into Lyra's world, why didn't Pan disappear (or go inside of her) when she was in our world. What would have happened to his daemon once he went back to his world? -

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 6:48 AMread the final book, you'll find out
*warning Spoilers for those who haven't finished the series*
I've finished TAS and what I don't understand, is how Will and Mary's daemons are going to work in their world. They were told that other people from their world can't see the daemons unless they were trained to see them. But the daemons are corporeal beings...they touch their people, snuggle with them, play with them and talk to them. They can pick up objects and carry them around. How is another human being going to react when Will's daemon does any of these actions? Is it going to appear that Will is stroking an invisible being? Is he going to appear to be talking to himself? I don't understand

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 5:33 PMSPOILERS
I think Mary's Daemon is invisible, but Will's became corporeal when he separated from his in the land of the dead but since he also got the ability to be separated from his daemon, she can stay home while he's at school/work/whatver situation it would be odd to brng your cat to.... and they just have snuggle time when he gets back home.
I think the greatest challenge would be to avoid people touching his "cat" -

Re: TGC - Daemon Questions
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 5:44 PMAh, thanks for clarifying that.
I just knew Will's daemon was going to be a cat. She will probably play the shy and/or cranky kitty whenever others are around to avoid being touched. I know a lot of real cats who are very choosy who they allow to touch them.
